Spanish filmmaker JA Bayona to return to Spanish-language cinema with Netflix disaster drama

JA Bayona, whose previous work includes The impossible, the orphanage, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was chosen to direct Netflix’s Spanish disaster film Snow Society, which brings Bayona back to the real-life catastrophe he had previously explored with The impossible released in 2012 with Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland.

The film, Snow Society, from the book by Pablo Vierci The Sociedad De La Nieve, is set in 1972 and tells the real-life story of what happened when a Uruguayan Air Force flight brought a rugby team to Chile crashed into a glacier in the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash and they were forced to resort to extraordinary methods, including cannibalism, to survive in one of the world’s most difficult environments.

The Spanish language film, written by Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego.

Enzo Vogrincic Roldán, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Tomas Wolf, Diego Ariel Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Francisco Romero, Rafael Federman, Felipe González Otaño, Agustín Della Corte, Valentino Alonso, Simón Hempe, Fernando Contigiani and Jareñ Gari, among the actors.

Snow Society will be shot in the Sierra Nevada (Andalusia, Spain), Montevideo (Uruguay) and several locations in the Andes (both Chile and Argentina), including El Valle de las Lágrimas, where the events really took place products.

Bayona’s return to Spanish-language cinema will mark 14 years since making the jump to English-language films.
