‘Misfit’ Spanish remake gets 2bOriginals release date

Transatlantic creative studio 2bOriginals, the production arm of digital media group 2b, will present “Misfit #eresotehaces”, a Spanish-language adaptation of the popular Dutch film “Misfit”, in theaters in 10 Latin American countries on the 14th. October.

The Dutch original first hit theaters in 2017, and at the end of the year it was the third highest-grossing Dutch film of the year, leading to two sequels and an upcoming Netflix original series. The “Misfit” franchise has now been remade in five territories, making it the most remade Dutch original feature in the country’s cinema history.

For this Spanish-language adaptation, longtime viral video powerhouse 2b, creators of the successful Spanish-language viral video platform Enchufe.tv, makes the leap to a traditional theatrical model, with the writer, producer and Longtime Enschufe.tv director Orlando Herrera is taking the reins as director of the ambitious new feature film.

“Misfit #eresotehaces” is the story of Julia, played by Mexican actress Alicia Jaziz (Netflix’s “Ingobernable”), a teenage Latin American who grew up in the United States. Not only is she popular in her school, on the verge of being advertised as a Prom Queen, but she also runs a busy YouTube channel. Things head south, however, when her parents decide they want to bring the family back to their native Ecuador.

Once there, Alicia has to start over. New student in a difficult Catholic school, she is described as a “gringa”, not Latina enough after growing up in the United States. Shortly after arriving, she runs into “Las Reinas”, the trio of mean girls from her new school who relish in intimidating the newcomer. Considered a “misfit,” Julia’s best hope for social survival is to find a group of friends with whom she can practice strength in numbers.

In order to establish instant credibility with young Latin American audiences, the “Misfit” team sought out and employed production and on-screen talent from across Latin America as well as Spain, who brought with them their loyal fans. More than 600 actors and influencers have tried their hand for primary and secondary roles in the film.

At the head of the final cast are Jaziz, the Mexican Gimena Gómez (“Escuela para Seductores”), the Argentinian Julián Cerati (The insignificant Juanquini of Netflix “), the Spaniard Javi Luna (” Violetta “), the Peruvian Raysa Ortíz (“De Vuelta al barrio”), Ecuadorian Samara Montero, Colombian Amy Rodríguez and Nataly Valencia and Ecuadorian Jorgue Ulloa. In total, the cast has over 63.4 million fans on social media, a key factor in the casting of previous versions of the film which have seen success in other territories.

“The big challenge was to adapt the original European version so that it was culturally relevant in a Latin American context,” Herrera explained. “Using the universal appeal and strengths of the original concept and giving it an authentic Latin American identity were the main objectives of the project. “

2b first acquired the Spanish language remake rights in 2020 as part of an agreement with the original Dutch owners of IP, NewBe and Splendid Film. At the time of production, production was slowed down by COVID, but filming was still completed in three weeks in Quito, Ecuador, following strict health and safety protocols.

“Misfit #eresotehaces” will receive a simultaneous theatrical release on October 14 in Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Nicaragua before heading to the streaming platforms in the region shortly thereafter.
