On May 20, the owners of Del Campo Empanadas will celebrate the first anniversary of their Fort Worth store, featuring savory and sweet empanadas, coffee and groceries imported from their native Argentina.

“It’s been really good,” said Rebeca Gigante, a daughter of co-owners Andrea Cacho-Gigante and her husband, Leo. “We opened in the middle of the pandemic, but everything went so well. We were surprised with the result and the love we received.

Andrea chose the name Del Campo, which means country or rustic in Spanish, in honor of her grandmother, who taught her to cook as a child in Argentina.

She considers working alongside her husband, her three children – Lau, Rebeca and Sebastian – and the employees, who are also considered part of the family, to be a huge blessing.

“Having my husband and kids with me and my friends is very important,” said Andrea. “My family are great supporters every day, every morning. I am so grateful to my three children.

Del Campo has a range of empanadas filled with beef, chicken, shrimp, and other meats or vegetables, but the Argentinian-style offerings are the most popular.

Sweet empanadas also have their share of fans.

“La Banutella is something my mother used to cook for us. Now it’s one of the most popular sweets we have, ”said Rebeca. “It’s a small pastry with banana and Nutella inside.”

In December 2000, the family moved to Fort Worth from Buenos Aires, Argentina. And when the time came to fulfill their dream of owning their own empanadas restaurant serving the same foods they grew up at home, opening in their own neighborhood was a no-brainer.

“The community is the best. They support us every day, every week, every month, ”said Andrea. “People are so nice and support us. We are blessed. “
